My company submitted a proposal for Mobile Learning Centres in some of the remote coffee growing area’s we service. It is an initiative by the digicel foundation. In short: fully equipped containers that fold open, into two classrooms.
The local community takes ownership of the project. That means, we provide the resources, the community provides teachers, maintenance and takes lead in the project. It is up to them to decide what form of education is desired. From daycare and Kindy, to adult literacy. My extension team can also use the MLC’s to conduct trainings and awareness workshops.
Yesterday I conducted a site visit to Masi, a village in the vicinity of Goroka. It is one of the possible locations for a MLC. In this case to cater for the youngest: Playschool and Kindy. In this case, it is a joint programme with the sponsor (digicel foundation) my company, a Goroka based private school and Masi village. Especially the exchange programme between a Goroka Private School and this local school is interesting to follow. I’m sure more updates will follow.

No one can count on a schedule, or rely on a tight planning. If the rains do not cause landslides, if the road is not held for ransome, it is a bit of fighting. After a few days of turmoil in Wau, all seems to have calmed down a bit. So, Back to work!…reschedule, and full speed ahead to prepare for coffee season!
Oh… in pittoresque Goroka all is quiet, of course! So do not think I am complaining all the time. Nope, au contraire! I’m in a good mood. I think the end of the rainy season is in sight! A beautiful sunny morning today. Perfect morning to take the dogs for a bit of a walk. Talking about dogs: I forgot to tell you we have extended the pack. Two new pups are getting along fine with their new family.

Well, it was last week. I had a very relaxing day, and a massive party on Saturday at the Aero Club. Thanks to all of you for coming, especially big sis from Moresby!! We all had a great time, and spent most of the Sunday recovering….. Nope, no party photo’s on this site, otherwise I can kiss any political ambitions goodbye ![]()
But now, back to work! A year older (and hopefully wiser). I might need to slow down a bit.. age is catching up with me. But do not worry, I already mailordered a wheelchair, just to be safe.
The team is off to Keto Tapasi for two weeks, and I’ll be zooming back and forth between different coffee supplier networks. It is still a race against the clock to get everything done in time.

The season is about to start. A lot of prep. work to be done. For me it means putting in extra hours to visit every single supplier and to conduct inspections before farmers get too busy with their coffee trees. This week I planned to send my team out to 2 remote areas. So far we did not manage to get to our coffee suppliers. The highway is closed due to a landslide….that is an easy fix, but as usual the road cannot be fixed before local ‘roadside’ people get their greedy hands on some “compensation” cash. [WHAT FOR???] I so hate these compensation claims. They hold the road and towns hostage. How about a zero tolerance policy by the gouvernment??
The second team did not make it either. Due to previous fighting the area is a ‘no-go-zone’ for a while. I hope things quiet down soon. I am starting to get nervous… can I get the work done before coffee certification audits are due?? Fingers crossed!
To get in the mood some new ‘coffee shots’ in the PNG gallery. Enjoy.
