A lot, probably most of the tradestores in PNG are owned and run by Asians. What gets to a lot of the PNG folk is that they also operate little kai-bars and small businesses. “That’s ours to run! “. Well, shit hit the fan and after riots and looting In Moresby, and in Lae, yesterday the unrest hit Kainantu.  All shops were looted. And right on schedule it hit Goroka today. Big mob out this morning, just waiting for the first rock to be thrown as a starting sign to go crazy. In West some teargas grenades could not prevent Bintangor getting hit. Shops at the market are ‘done’ already.

Read an article from The National for a bit more background ‘PNG style’. Better written and with a bit more history is the BBC report.

Visit to Madang

It has been a wile. Time for an update. The last few weeks I have been quite busy (business or pleasure? well… both). I spent some time in Madang and Karkar Island for work…but got to enjoy the encredible hospitality of the Middleton’s and their plantations. A legendary weekend. Some pics will follow shortly, of course.

In Goroka we had a massive housewarming party to get me settled in, combined with a ‘go finish’ party of G & K who are on their way back to the UK right this day (have a safe trip!).

This week I am in Brisbane to take care of some bureaucracy. But meanwhile I enjoy myself to the max: met up with family and we went to the Kumuls v. Kiwis game at the Goldcoast (what an atmosphere!) and will get a chance to enjoy a Melbourne cup party on Tuesday.

So much for this little update

Take care, JK.

On Patrol: October 08-10

An amazing three-day trip to Wau. It was a drive from Goroka to Lae. First thing in the morning drive to Wau (about 3 hrs). I cannot get over the views. They are just amazing. From the higlands steep down to the Ramu Valley, towards the floodplains of Markham Valley to end up in Lae. The trip to Wau again has a different scenery with steep forest-cpvered mountains and amazing river views. The closer you get to Bulolo, the more people you see panning for gold.

I got in Wau at 09:00 and got all the work done. Factory visit, a meeting with about 200 farmers from the area, a mumu (earth ‘ oven’ )….and drive all the way back again. Overnight in Lae…and back to Goroka.

I should send some pics to microsoft….that default teletubby desktop landscape just cannot compete with the views on the Valley’s of PNG. I uploaded some pics again (album: portraits and a scenic shot).

Enjoy! JK

This weekend I’m in Port Moresby for a bit of R&R.  Saturday  a trip on the Moresby Chief and hang out local Island with a fun crowd, good food and ad. lib. on the drinks. Of course some hard work was involved: bit of snorkling at the reef. I wonder…should I invest in underwater housing for the camera?

Back in PNG

….and we’re back! Port Moresby still looks pretty much the same. Maybe the potholes got bigger. And amost of the car wrecks are all gone (scrap metal is now worth something…so more than just wrecked cars disappear, hehe). Aah. it feels good to be back.
